So, Martha Stewart, I am not. I don't mean that I have some connections that would constitute insider trading, which will consequently make sure my butt lands in a federal prison. No, I mean I have no idea what to do with a bird. Why couldn't the Pilgrims have said that something easy, like spaghetti, would be the food that millions of future Americans would stuff themselves with once a year, and eat leftovers of for a week after the holiday? I could do spaghetti.
In one of my less lucid moments, I volunteered to take care of arranging the food for the Thanksgiving dinner at the emergency clinic. It was easy enough, but no one who sold whole turkeys would also agree to slice the thing. I may be okay at making incicsions with a #10 blade, but a carving knife is a whole different story.
I picked up the wholly cooked turkey at Kroger's on Wednesday night. Wholly cooked, but yet, I still had to warm the bird the next morning. I was having flashbacks already to the botched mashed potato incident of 2002. There was this string inside the turkey packaging. What the heck was that for? It resembled a shoe string to me. Ah, a turkey lifter? Hmm...okay, just follow the directions. It's not that hard.
Admitedly, I cheated. The turkey was already cooked; all I had to do was warm it and bring it in to the clinic. During the course of my six-hour shift, the turkey got rave reviews. Super! At least I was capable of turning on the oven, pre-heating it, and warming the bird. Alas, I did not eat any of the turkey. I planned on skipping the turkey to avoid the tryptophan, and thus avoid the post-dinner slump that is seen in living rooms across the U.S. after the turkey is served and the dogs are sorting through the trash for remanants of meat left on the bones. (Bad idea!)
Driving my mom's sporty orange car (as my SUV was seeing snow in another state), I drove as illegally as legally possible back to my house after work to get the last minute preparations done for my vacation to the Twin Cities.
Up, up, and away we go...more vacation details soon.
