If you had asked me three months ago what I would be doing during the first full week of December, I would have said that I would be in NYC, doing the tourist thing with MP. Three months ago, he planned on going to Ranger School for the U.S. Army, and would have just returned last week. After going through such an intensive training, he would have completely deserved the leave in his home state.
As it always seems to be the case, life intervenes. I'm not in NYC, but instead, teaching in various classrooms all week, and working in both the local and the emergency clinic, just like any other normal week. MP did not go to Ranger school, but instead, stayed at his assigned post, and prepared for what will happen later tonight. Around 2 a.m., he'll be on a plane that will go first to Germany, and then on to Iraq. He'll be deployed for at least six months. And for six months, I'll pray for him (and his colleagues) every day. I know they are doing something amazing by protecting those of us back here who may not completely understand the preciousness of the freedoms that we enjoy. For that, I say "thank you."
I called him as I drove home from a teaching assignment this afternoon. He sounded tired, but said he was getting ready to take a nap. He tells me that he's excited. I can't say I'm excited that he's going, but I'm supportive nonetheless. I know that he'll be in touch when he can be, when he's not doing the job he's been called to do.
So, to MP, I'm saying good-bye for now, but I know you'll be home soon. I'm not allowed to say "be safe," because he won't be, but I can say "look out for your guys." I'll miss you.
Your friend will be in my prayers.
